A priest who is interested in becoming a Missionary of Mercy should speak to his Ordinary (Bishop or Religious Superior).
If the Ordinary agrees, the Ordinary may petition for the priest to be appointed a Missionary Mercy through a written request addressed to His Excellency, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization.
The letter of the Ordinary should involve the following:
- The Full Name of the Candidate
- Where the Candidate is incarnated (Diocese, Religious Order, Secular Institute, or Society of Apostolic Life)
- The current Diocese in which the Candidate resides
- The Candidate’s Date of Birth and City of Birth
- The Candidate’s Date of Priestly Ordination
- The Candidate’s mailing address
- The Candidate’s landline phone number and mobile phone number with international prefix.
- The Candidate’s email address
- The reasons why the Candidate is fit to become a Missionary of Mercy

The Pontifical Council normally asks the candidate to fill out a brief questionnaire that would be necessary for making the Decree of Appointment, together with a Declaration of Consent so that they may share the data with Diocesan Bishops and other Missionaries of Mercy so that they may be contacted with regard to the exercise of this Mission. We include a copy of that questionnaire and Declaration here in case the candidate and his bishop would like to include them in the application.
The response to the request of the Ordinary will be communicated in due time. In the Candidate is accepted, a decree appointing the New Missionary will be sent.
Upon appointment, it would be good for the new Missionary to communicate the appointment here so that the new Missionary can be added to the Find a Missionary page of this website and be included immediately in events and activities being organized already by Missionaries of Mercy in the USA and Canada.
